Black Walnut, Juglans nigra - One of the most valuable hardwood trees in the country. Grows best on rich, well-drained soils in southern New Hampshire. Rich, dark brown heartwood lumber used for veneer, furniture, cabinets, and ornamental woodworking. Large, round nuts favored by squirrels and mice. Tomatoes, apples and other species may not survive near large walnut trees. These seedlings were root pruned to stimulate fine root growth. Mature height 70 to 100'. Seed source: New Hampshire
